Exp/Invalid Permits

Currently, Missaukee County adheres to 2000 Michigan Building Code for commercial construction and 2003 Michigan Residential Code for residential construction.  According to 2003 Michigan building Code, building permits can expire under the following conditions:

Section 105.5 Expiration:  Every permit issued shall become invalid unless the work authorized by such permit is commenced within 180 days after its issuance, or if the work authorized by such permit is suspended or abandoned for a period of 180 days after the time the work is commenced.

An administation fee of one-half of the original building permit fee, or a minimum of $45.00, to renew an invalid building permit.  To retain active status on a building permit:

  • Building inspections should be scheduled with no less than six months in between the required inspections.
  • Should a period of six months lapse between inspections and work has continued during that time period, notify the building department office in writing of the status of the construction project and approximately when the next building inspection will be needed.  Include in the correspondence the building permit number, site address, homeowner’s name and type of project.
  • Should the building permit become invalid, payment of one-half of the original permit fee, or a minimum of $45.00 will be required to activate the building permit.
